Stories on Stilts and Other Tall Tales – Storyteller Ben Moffat will entertain the audience in a storytelling performance that will use stilts, masks and puppets. Ben has always been fascinated with masks. His home is filled with more than 200 varieties that he describes as intriguing and mystical. He has performed and taught nationally and internationally since 1986. Ben attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study Asian theatre and directing. While at UH, he performed Javanese dance and music, and appeared in English language productions of kabuki and noh drama. He was among the first troupe of foreigners invited to perform traditional opera in China. This 45-minute recommended for ages 5 and older. The Dead Season book signing – Come and meet Maui author Anthony Pignataro to talk story about his latest book. The Dead Season is the sequel to Anthony Pignataro’s first novel Small Island, which concerns a Maui bartender who has a habit of mixing it up with organized crime, mysterious women and crooked cops. 3-2-1 Sale w/ the Friends of the Library of Hawaii – If you are a book lover, this is the sale for you! With an overwhelming inventory, the Friends are adding this very unique sale to raise money for Hawai‘i’s 50 public libraries. On this day, Day One (Saturday, November 10), everything will be priced at $3.00. Great books, cheap prices, and helping Hawai‘i’s 50 public libraries! Plenty of parking, lots of book experts on site to assist you, and a fabulous collection of books in every category. The warehouse is the one with the big Re-use Hawaii logo on the front. - Friends of the Libraries Kona Book Sale – Every second Saturday, the Friends of the Library, Kona hold a book sale. F.O.L.K. Members receive 20% off Lanai Sales. - Frances H. Kakugawa author event – The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i and Watermark Publishing present a series of author readings and discussions with former educator and caregiving advocate Frances Kakugawa! Frances will do readings from Kapoho: Memoir of a Modern Pompeii, her works on caregiving and Alzheimer’s, and her latest keiki book Wordsworth! Stop the Buldozer! Book Launch: Mystery Islands, Discovering the Ancient Pacific – A new book on the early discovery and settlement of the Pacific islands, including major coverage of ancient Hawaii, has just been published by the University of the South Pacific Press. It is enlivened by vignettes of personal experiences and enriched by 16 pages of vivid color photographs. Based on years of travel and research by Canadian author Tom Koppel, the title is Mystery Islands: Discovering the Ancient Pacific. It sells for $40. Tom Koppel, who is visiting Honolulu, will be selling and signing his book. Personal checks are gladly accepted. A brief presentation will also occur at 1:30pm. - “Daughters of Fire” by Tom Peek – Volcano resident and author Tom Peek will read from his new novel, Daughters of Fire, the story of a visiting astronomer who falls in love with a Hawaiian anthropologist. After Dark in the Park: “WASPs: The Forgotten Wings” – The National Park Service at WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument will take a closer look into an often overlooked contribution to WWII-the use of women pilots in WWII. Many people don’t know of the 1,074 women who earned their wings, flying for the Army Air Force and becoming the first women ever to get behind the controls of American military aircraft to fly non-combat missions. Contributions made by Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) to the success of the war were unprecedented at a time when women were not considered equal. Author and historian Vera Williams will discuss her book WASPs:Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII to commemorate Veteran’s Day 2012. Williams interviewed over 200 WASPs to shed a light on this subject and to share the heroic and often untold stories and sacrifices these women made in the name of freedom. This is sure to be an enlightening discussion about multiple perspectives of history and honoring those who served our country but were “forgotten wings” after the war ended. Veteran’s Day Celebration & Children’s Book Signing at Walgreens Wahiawa – Join Walgreens Hawaii and VoiceMaster Advertising for a free family event honoring the military community and benefiting Hawaii Literacy’s programs. The celebration will feature giveaways, keiki activities and live entertainment. All are welcome! Hawaii children’s book author Jerilyn Ito, whose books are now sold at all Walgreens Hawaii stores, will be there to sign her two newest books: Finding our ‘Ohana and Double Rainbow Island. A portion of proceeds from sales of both books are donated to Hawaii Literacy’s Adult and Family Literacy programs. There will be FREE cotton candy, popcorn, shave ice and beverages, as well as face painting, balloons, a keiki jumper, entertainment, prizes and a visit from the Bookmobile from 11:30 to 1:30pm.
