Last Chance: The Big Book Sale
This weekend is your last chance to clean up on cheap books at the Annual Friends of the Library of Hawaii Book Sale McKinley High School. The sale will continue on Friday as per the rest of the weekdays. Saturday will be 1/2 off day, where every book will be priced at half off the marked sales price. - 64th Annual Friends of the Library of Hawaii Book Sale – The 64th Annual Book Sale, a.k.a. the McKinley Book Sale takes place from June 18 – 26, 2011. This is by far the largest used book sale in the State and has become a well-attended and traditional event by and for Hawai‘i residents and mainland visitors alike. McKinley High School Cafeteria (1039 S. King Street – entrance on Pensacola Street between King St. & Kapiolani Blvd.); 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. For more information click here.
- Kid’s Craft – If you’re on the Big Island, come down to the library for Kid’s Craft, a part of the 2011 Summer Reading Program. Today, keiki will be making a Brown Bag Note Card. This program is suitable for ages 6 and up. Kealakekua Public Library (Mamalahoa Highway) ; 2:30 P.M.
- BYO-Crafts (Bring Your Own Crafts) – Bring your own supplies, materials, tools, snack-to-share, dinner and beverages (no refrigerator or microwave oven will be available). Crafts include any arts and crafts such as paper, plastic, textile, or metal. Free table space will be provided for up to two persons per table. Four tables will have access to electrical outlets for using tools or equipment such as hot glue, heat guns, Cricut R, lamps, or sewing machines. No selling or solicitation will be allowed. Registration is requested as participation is limited to 20 crafters; 10 tables are available. - Mission Houses Museum – Come and learn about the Mission Houses’ Museum event Fourth of July: Pa’ina in the early 1800s. See the old fashioned tabletop games they will bring for display. This is part of a Bookfair for the museum—mention them at the register and partial proceeds from most purchases you make will benefit the Mission Houses Museum. - The Hawaii Book of Rice book event – In addition to a talk-story session with author Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, Hawaii’s Plantation Village volunteers will be preparing an ‘ono-licous tasting menu of recipes from The Hawaii Book of Rice. Call (808) 677-0110 for more info.

- “Get Ready” Emergency Preparedness Workshop – June is the start of hurricane season. Tsunamis could strike at any time, and even a regular thunderstorm could knock out power and cause flooding. Make sure your family, neighborhood and community are ready for emergencies and disasters of all types. This 45-minute workshop covers key information specific to Kapolei residents, when and where to evacuate, and clears up the difference between hurricane and tsunami shelters. - Irish Folk Tales – Niall de Burca is renowned for his unique storytelling style that showcases a remarkable range of tales told with great charm, judgment and superb timing. A native of the West of Ireland, a land soaked in legend; de Burca will take listeners on an unforgettable journey through the landscape of ancient Ireland. - Stories from Around the World – Admission is free. David Del Rocco will share folktales from Hawaii and well as other far away lands such as Africa, Alaska, Italy, Laos, and the Philippines. Del Rocco’s tales are mostly humorous in nature and explain how different cultures view aspects of their world. The 45-minute program is recommended for ages 5 and older. - Meet the Author-Illustrator: James Rumford – Rumford is an award-winning children’s book author-illustrator and Manoa artist. - The Magic of Arneleo – Arneleo the Magician aka Arnie Rabin will be performing at the library! Delighting Kona audiences for the past 37 years, he was bitten by the “magic bug” at age 5, when he was given a magic kit as a present. The serious study of the art began when he needed an illusion to be part of a theatre production. - Makiki Community Library Used Book Sale – Come to this all-volunteer, community library for a used book sale on Saturday and Sunday! - A Tribute to Slack Key w/ John Keawe – Keawe is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). His performance will offer a tribute to the slack key style, featuring selections from the work of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and many others, as well as numerous compositions of his own. - Celebrate Aloha book signing event – Enjoy a night at the museum, with complimentary entry, island music, feel good vibes, friendly people, pupu. - Rhyme and Reason: Zakariya Amataya and Kealoha – Zakariya Amataya, Thailand’s award-winning, Ginsberg-inspired, Sunni hipster poet joins local slam poet favorite Kealoha in an evening of poetry from the edge. Amaya is the first poetry winner who writes primarily in free verse and not rhyme and Thailand’s first Muslim recipient. Ticket prices vary. - The Folk Art of Chinese Knotting – Barbara Chung Ho will present an interactive and customized workshop. She will first share a brief history of the folk art and then a conduct step-by-step demonstration on the basic techniques of Chinese knotting. - Fundraiser for the Prisoner’s Revolutionary Literature Fund – Enjoy an evening of excellent food prepared by Ahmed and Ako in the newly re-opened Da Spot, accompanied by music, poetry and socializing with friends – and all for a good cause! The Prisoner’s Revolutionary Literature Fund (www.prlf.org) is an educational literature fund that fills requests from U.S. prisoners for revolutionary literature.
