How can you help promote literacy on Oahu? Come to Barnes & Noble Kahala 8/7-8/9 and mention “First Book-Oahu” with any purchase! And you can spread the word!First Book-Oahu’s Book Fair Fundraiser weekend is coming up soon! HBB will be there from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm SAT 8/8 posting live Twitter book recommendations and blog reviews every hour! We’re a little nervous since it’ll be our first ever rec-fest. That’s eight book reviews in eight hours… on 8/8! HBB is happy to help support First Book-Oahu in their effort raise money so that they can provide books to underprivileged kids and host community events that promote literacy on Oahu. Clifford the Big Red Dog and Miss Teen Hawaii World 2009 will also be there for story time at 11:00, and that’s just the beginning!
Later during the day, B&N is hosting two authors who have come to promote and sign their newest books. At 12:00 pm Honolulu based author and illustrator, James Rumford, will be signing his new children’s book Max and the Dumb Flower Picture and he’ll also have an area set up for kids to draw their own flower pictures! At the end of the day, all the children’s illustrations will be displayed in the store.
James Rumford is the author and illustrator of many beautiful children’s books including Dog of the Sea Waves, Beowulf, The Cloud Makers, and The Island Below the Star which tells the tale of five brothers who journey across the Pacific by canoe to find Hawaii. His stories are diverse and encourage kids to learn about different cultures. He’s definitely a local author you don’t want to miss! HBB will certainly include one of his books in our keiki book rec-fest. The hard part is deciding which one!
Celeste Gonsalves will also be there around 2:00 pm to promote her book Teen Wise. It’s a guide for both parents and teens on the importance of making good decisions and forming good communication habits for success. Check out this article in the Star-Bulletin more info on the author and the book. Celeste Gonsalves is currently finishing up a degree at the University of Hawaii, proceeds of her book go to help Women in Need, a local organization, AND she’s hosting an essay contest via her website www.t-wise-book.com.
