- Celebrate Reading: Gene Luen Yang – We introduce you to Celebrate Reading special guest, Gene Yang, and review three of his graphic novels: American Born Chinese, The Eternal Smile, and Prime Baby.
- Celebrate Reading: Matt de la Pena – Matt is the second special guest at Celebrate Reading. Here, we review one of his young adult novels, We Were Here.
- Women’s History Month: 500 Great Books by Women… – Misty celebrates the end of March by looking back at Women’s History Month and sharing a list of 500 female-penned classics, finding two Hawaii books among the best.

Saturday, April 2
- 10:00am – Maui folk, bring your keiki down to Barnes & Noble in Lahaina for a fun children’s story time. More info here.
10:00am – It’s the first Saturday of the month, which means it’s time for the First Saturday Sale! by the Friends of the Library Hawaiʻi. The sale will be from 10am – 2pm at Bill’s Bookmobile (690 Pohukaina Street in Kakaʻako). There are over 2,500 every day bookmobile selections PLUS April’s specials: History, Religion, Mystery, Nature, Cookbooks, Hobbies, Children’s Books and Music. - 11:00am – Come to Barnes & Noble Ala Moana for a fun storytime for kids. They’ll be reading Noodle & Lou by Liz Garton Scanlon among others. More info here.
01:00pm – Special Barnes & Noble Ala Moana author event! Come down to the bookstore and meet Mingmei Yip, author of novels Peach Blossom Pavilion and Petals from the Sky. She also wrote and illustrated Chinese Children’s Favorite Stories. Mingmei will be on hand to talk story and sign copies of her latest novel, Song of the Silk Road. There will be a Q&A session, followed by a book signing. Definitely a great opportunity to meet this talented Chinese-American author! More info here.
Sunday, April 3
- 10:30am – Special Family Storytime in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month at Kaimuki Public Library. The Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council and State Department of Health are sponsoring these free story times. Phone the library at 733-8422 for more info.
06:45pm – Come to the next Aloha Shorts free live taping! Aloha Shorts dedicates its upcoming live taping to Earth Day with stories and poems about sustainability in our islands. As always, it’s at Hawaii Public Radio’s Atherton Studio. Audiences at the April 3rd taping will also be able to take home a reminder to “go green,” courtesy of Blue Planet Foundation, the local organization dedicated to ending Hawai’i’s dependence on fossil fuels. The Week After (Mon – Thurs)
Annual Edible Book Contest – The University of Hawai’i at Manoa Library would like to invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Hawai‘i Edible Book Contest at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa Hamilton Library in support of the Hawai’i Food Bank. Starting at 8 a.m., Edible Book entries may be delivered to Hamilton Library’s Sunny Alcove. Bring a contribution for the Hawai’i Food Bank to receive an entry pass to view the Edible Book Contest. This event is free and open to the public. Monday, April 4, 8:00am at University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Hamilton Library Room 301. For more information click here.
- Books are Building Blocks – This free monthly program is to encourage family literacy. There will be five separate reading groups: ages 5-7, ages 8-10, ages 11-13, ages 14-18, and their parent(s). Each group will have a person reading aloud to them, followed by a discussion of what was read. Tuesday, April 5, 4:30pm at Kailua-Kona Public Library (Big Island).
- Meditation for Everyone – Allie Shields of the Mahasiddha Kadampa Buddhist Center will demonstrate and discuss how the healthy habit of meditation can be added to your everyday life. Although each session is taught as part of a series, newcomers are always welcome. This program is suitable for ages 12 and older, and especially for teens and adults. Tuesday, April 5, 6:00pm at Aina Haina Public Library, Meeting Room.
- Puzzletime! – Keiki ages 1½ – 5, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to exercise their minds by playing with educational puzzles. A short storytime with Auntie Christin will follow, featuring stories, songs, and finger plays. Thursday, April 7, 10:30am at Hawaii Kai Public Library‘s downstairs meeting room.
