- See “Blue,” New HTY Play – The Honolulu Theatre for Youth will present “Blue,” a new stage production by Annie Cusick Wood. Admission is free. The show introduces the idea of tolerance and understanding in an age appropriate theatrical experience. The 45-minute performance is recommended for ages 3 and older. Author Event with Dietrich Varez: Pele and Hi’iaka, A Tale of Two Sisters – Merrie Monarch Friday is Pele & Hi’iaka Day at Basically Books! Join them as they welcome author and artist Dietrich Varez, who will stop by to talk story and sign his new illustrated retelling of the Pele and Hi’iaka legend, Pele and Hi’iaka, A Tale of Two Sisters published by Petroglyph Press. Making the Most of the Golden Age of Reading: A Conversation With Honolulu Children’s Author Sue Cowing – It’s a great moment: that day when children finally begin to read independently but still enjoy being read to from books they can’t yet read themselves. Sue will share the process of creating her three books, all aimed at these golden readers. Sue Cowing’s debut puppet-and-boy novel, You Will Call Me Drog [read our review], is included in the 2012 edition of Best Books to Read Aloud With Children of All Ages (available on NOOK). Friends of Waialua Library Book Sale – Friends of the Waialua Public Library holds a book sale at the library every 3rd Saturday of the month! There is also a bake sale at the book sale. - Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – FOLK host a book sale on the second Saturday of each month with a few exceptions. F.O.L.K. Members receive 20% off Lanai Sales. - Tales with Aunty Brenda – Storyteller Brenda Freitas-Obregon, Children’s Librarian at Kalihi-Palama Public Library, will present various folktales and stories from around the world. - The Art of Taiko (Japanese Drums) – Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, “The Art of Taiko.” Endo, a composer, leader, and performer of contemporary taiko (Japanese drums) will introduce the various drums and percussion instruments of Japan that are used in traditional and contemporary music. - Stories on Stilts and Other Tall Tales – Storyteller Ben Moffat will present a storytelling experience using stilts, masks, and puppets in a fun performance for the whole family. Kahului Public Library; 2:00 P.M. For more info, call the Library at 873-3097.
The Tempest – Join members of the company of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the next production of Aloha Performing Arts Company, for a sneak preview of the show. The actors will show us scenes from the play as Prospero wields his deep magic to punish his enemies, to control his spirits, and to fight with Caliban, a creature of the island. Come explore their production as Prospero’s mighty powers must give way before the Tempests of the human heart. - The Friends of Pearl City Library’s Sunday Special – The Sunday Special book truck is located in the lobby of the Pearl City Public Library near the Friends’ Bookshelf. This week’s special: Hardcover non-fiction are $1.25 each. All proceeds from this sale are for the benefit of Pearl City Public Library. Pearl City Public Library is open 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 453-6566.
