Friday, April 19

  • 50th Anniversary Celebration – The community is invited to celebrate the Library’s 50th anniversary & National Library Week! There will be performances by various hula halaus, Ka‘u Middle & High School ukulele and ensemble students, a craft demonstration by the Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka‘u, face painting (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.), Haiku poem readings and awarding of prizes to the winners of the Haiku poem writing contest on the theme for National Library Week “Communities Matter @ Your Library”.   • Haleakala by Jill EngledowMeet Author Jill Engledow – Local author Jill Engledow will present programs at several Maui public libraries during April, expanding on her research from her recently published book, Haleakala: A History of the Maui Mountain. THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURES: A discussion and presentation of photos taken during the Kipahulu Scientific Expedition of 1967, whose organizers and participants included many Kipahulu residents. Hana Public & School Library (Maui); 2:00 P.M. For more information call 248-4848
  • Hawai’i Book Launch Celebration – Mark Panek, author of non-fiction books such as Gaijin Yokozuna and the award-winning Big Happiness will be launching the release of his first novel, “Hawai’i” at the book store. Come for a reading, discussion, and book signing. Refreshments will be served.   • Think Green treeGreen Saturday – Malama O Manoa will demonstrate tumbler and worm composters, and display popular chicken types for urban living.  Free baby Kalo, Ti, and Ko will be provided or participants can plant their own.  Recyclable craft activities will be conducted for all ages.  Participants will receive a lucky drawing ticket by bringing a HI-5 can or bottle. Manoa Public Library (2716 Woodlawn Drive); 10:00 A.M. For more information or to register for the April 13 program, please call the Library at 988-0459.
  • ‘Ewa Which Way Book Event – Author Tyler Miranda was raised on the west side of O‘ahu, where his stories are often set. His experiences growing up in Hawai‘i in a local Portuguese family have strongly influenced his writing. His first novel, ‘Ewa Which Way is a coming-of-age novel set in the early 1980s, around the time of Hurricane ‘Iwa. Join this one-hour discussion on his brand new novel, which will be released by Bamboo Ridge Press in April.   • Isle of Maui Pipe BandThe Isle of Maui Pipe Band – The Isle of Maui Pipe Band will delight the audience with live Celtic, Irish, and other popular music. The group, which was created in 2002, has performed at a variety of events on Maui, like the Maui County Fair Parade, The 4th of July Parade in Makawao, The Upcountry Fair, and St Patrick’s Day festivities. They have also performed at The Hawaiian Scottish Festival on Oahu.   • A Tribute to Slack Key w/ John Keawe – John Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). Keawe will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the music of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and others, in addition to presenting his original compositions. Aiea Public Library (99-143 Moanalua Rd.); 2:00 P.M. For more information please phone: 483-7333
  • PAWS for Reading, DogsPAWS for Reading – A free program for keiki in grades 1 through 5, offered every Saturday in April 2013 at the library. The programs will be conducted in the Children’s Area. The Hawaii Canines for Independence, a non-profit organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially-trained dogs to assist them in living more independent lives, will present the Reading Educational Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program which is said to improve children’s reading and communication skills. Reading to a Therapy Dog can help build a keiki’s reading confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and is a lot of fun. Parents should contact the Library to sign up their children for 15-minute reading sessions. Pre-registration is required.
