- Maui Friends of the Library used book sale – Maui Friends of the Library will be having a used book sale in front of Whole Foods MarketPlease stop by and check out our selection of fiction, non-fiction and oversize books. Big Island Celebrate Reading Festival – Celebrate Reading is coming to the Big Island! This event is free and open to the public. Some of the special guest authors participating are: Gail Tsukiyama (Women of the Silk, Street of a Thousand Blossoms); Kate Elliott (Cold Magic, Cold Fire); Sue Cowing (You Will Call Me Drog); Mark Panek (Big Happiness); Cathy Song (Picture Bride, School Figures); Matthew Kaopio (Up Among the Stars); and Jon Osorio who will be the Storyteller and MC. Matson the Mouse book reading (keiki) – This reading is a part of the 4th annual Henry Keialoha Steel Guitar Festival. A special event for keiki, a reading of the book Matson the Mouse [read our review of the book], will precede a presentation about Matson Line’s famous white ships by author Duncan O’Brien. O’Brien is a leading authority on the history of the Matson Line passenger ship era in Hawaii. His book, The White Ships, is a coffee-table history of the ships that carried thousands of passengers across the Pacific in the “Grand Manner of Matson” from 1927-78. - The Friends of Ewa Beach Public Library Annual Book Sale – The book sale will offer a variety of used books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records at bargain prices. See “Blue,” New HTY Play – The Honolulu Theatre for Youth will present “Blue,” a new stage production by Annie Cusick Wood. Admission is free. The show introduces the idea of tolerance and understanding in an age appropriate theatrical experience. The 45-minute performance is recommended for ages 3 and older. - Chamber Music: Hawaii’s Galliard String Quartet – The Galliard String Quartet, considered to be Hawaii’s premier string quartet, will perform a concert featuring the music of favorite composers such as Bach, Mozart, Ravel, Prokofiev, Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani, and others. - Special Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading. This week they will be reading Dream Big, Little Pig! by Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi. - Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, “The Art of Taiko” – Endo, a composer, leader, and performer of contemporary taiko (Japanese drums) will introduce the various drums and percussion instruments of Japan that are used in traditional and contemporary music. Kauai Children’s Authors Guild Book Signing – Kauai Mini Golf is hosting a group book signing for members of the Kauai Children’s Authors Guild. Local authors will be available to sign copies of their children’s books. - Na Haku Mele o Hawaii Nei: Poets of Contemporary Hawaii – Eric Paul Shaffer, who is a poet and novelist, will read a selection of poems written by poets of contemporary Hawaii. Shaffer, who is also an
instructor at Honolulu Community College, is the author of “Lahaina Noon,” “Portable Planet,” and “Burn & Learn.” This one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 and older. - The Music and Dance of Bali – Performers Made Widana and Anna Reynolds will demonstrate traditional Balinese music and dance.
