- Children’s Literature Hawaii book sale – Children Literature Hawaii (CLH) is hosting a children’s book sale on Friday and Saturday to help raise funds for the June 2012 Biennial Conference. There will be good deals on previously-owned children and young adult titles and we encourage people of all ages to drop by and take a look. This sale isn’t just for parents! - John Keawe, “A Tribute to Slack Key” – Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient, will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the music of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and others, in addition to presenting his original compositions at two libraries on Friday. - Kauai Children’s Authors Guild Book Signings – Guild member Monika Mira will be signing copies of her book, The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book [read our review] at Na Aina Kai at their monthly keiki day event. - Money Smart Family Storytime – Children ages 3 and older, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to learn about money through stories and crafts. - The Music and Dance of Bali – Performers Made Widana and Anna Reynolds will demonstrate traditional Balinese music and dance. Gamelan, the traditional musical ensemble found in Bali, includes gongs, bronze metallophone instruments of various sizes, double-headed drums, and flutes. Experience the music and dance of Bali. - Special Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading. This week they will be reading Isabella: Girl on the Go by Jennifer Fosberry. - Chamber Music: Hawaii’s Galliard String Quartet – The Galliard String Quartet, considered to be Hawaii’s premier string quartet, will perform a concert featuring the music of favorite composers such as Bach, Mozart, Ravel, Prokofiev, Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani, and others. - ABC’s of Credit for Young Adults – Kimo Wong, Vice President of Bank of Hawaii’s Waikiki Business Banking Center, serves as the business banking manager and is also responsible for managing a portfolio of small business clients. Wong will discuss how to understand the basics of credit, credit reporting, credit scoring, the importance of having a good credit history, and what to do if credit problems occur. - Origami Folding Workshop – Origami expert Scott Macri will provide an informational and interactive program on the different genres of origami and showcase various types of origami models. Scott has been folding origami for 15 years and is knowledgeable of the current trends and history of origami. Seating is limited and origami paper will be provided. - How to Publish Your Book – Marilyn Mendoza, author of From Agoraphobia to Zen: Uncovering the Core of My Anxiety and Reclaiming My Life (2011), was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and is now a Makaha resident. The book presents the author’s true story about her lifelong struggle with panic attacks, agoraphobia, and food addiction. Mendoza’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will focus on how she got her book published. Waianae Public Library (85-625 Farrington Hwy); 2:00 P.M. - Poetry Fever – The Honolulu Theatre for Youth will present free performances of “Poetry Fever,” a new stage production. “Poetry Fever” injects humor to the written and spoken word to discuss topics ranging from local culture to school lunch. Material for the program is selected from 10 years of exceptional writing by Hawaii’s local students. The performance provides an authentic voice to the experiences of growing up in modern-day Hawaii and encourages audiences to give thought and voice to their own experiences. - The Slack Key Artistry of Jeff Peterson – Peterson, a multiple Grammy Award and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, is recognized as one of Hawaii’s most versatile musicians. His focus on Slack Key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage. Peterson will share his passion for the guitar in words and music. Pearl City Public Library; 1:00 P.M. For more info, call the Library at 453-6566.
- Stories from Around the World – Storyteller Dave Del Rocco, a former HSPLS Children’s Librarian, will share folktales from Hawaii and well as other faraway places such as Africa, Alaska, Italy, Laos, and the Philippines. Del Rocco’s tales are mostly humorous in nature and explain how different cultures view aspects of their world. The Friends of Kaneohe Public Library is sponsoring the 45-minute program which is recommended for ages 5 and older, but is free and open to the public.
