- Hawaii Kai Community Bookstore Grand Opening – Hawaii Kai Library has been in operation since April, and now the store run by “the friends of the HK library” is running a grand opening from the 22nd – 24th. It is a ‘community store’ run by students and residents as volunteers. All materials sold are donated by the community residents as well, and most importantly, all proceeds go right back to the library. A wide assortment of books will be on sale and there will be a free drawing (no purchase necessary). Hawaii Kai Public Library (Ground Floor); 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. - Children’s Storytime – Join the book store for a special Storytime as they will be reading Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great! How can an ordinary goat compete when a unicorn with magical powers moves into town? Held in the Children’s Section. Barnes & Noble Ala Moana (1450 Ala Moana Blvd. STE 1272); 11:00 A.M. Kapolei Library 9th Anniversary – In recognition of the Kapolei Public Library’s 9th anniversary, a sculpture of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar: inspired by the work of Eric Carle,” will be unveiled in the Children’s Room. This caterpillar was created by young patrons, under the direction of local artist Alison Bishop, during a recent Summer Reading Program event. Immediately following the unveiling of the sculpture, patrons will have the opportunity to look at a large variety of colorful former caterpillars. Dancetta Feary, a butterfly enthusiast, will invite patrons to step into her Butterfly House, where she will share her stories and her love of these beautiful creatures. This 90-minute program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library Kapolei and is suitable for all ages. Kapolei Public Library (1020 Manawai St.); 1:00 P.M. For more information, call 693-7050.
Healthy and Easy Vegan Cooking – Ori Ann Li, a former Mrs. Hawaii International who has found her niche as a vegan chef, will demonstrate how to prepare several recipes featured in her cookbook Ori Ann Li’s Vegan Paradise: 65 Unforgettable Recipes and offer free taste samples. The program will include a question-and-answer session, and an autograph session of her book which will be available for sale . Chef Li, who specializes in world vegan cuisines, received her culinary training in Europe and North America. She is known as an innovative vegan culinary artist who strives to achieve the perfect balance between flavor, nutrition and aesthetics. Aiea Public Library (99-143 Moanalua Rd); 2:00 P.M. 7th Annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History Program – The annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History program is here and there’s lots of speakers, presentations, and demonstrations showcasing the best in Hawaii’s history and culture at this event. Best of all, the event is FREE to the public. Hawaii Book Blog will be volunteering at the event (more than likely at the book bazaar), so drop on by and tell us “hi!” Registration is encouraged to guarantee seating. Hawaii Convention Center’s Lili‘u Theater (Theater 310) at the Jean Charlot Courtyard, Meeting Level 3 (1801 Kalākaua Ave.); 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. - Douglas Corleone Book Signing – Come and meet author Douglas Corleone, a former NYC defense attorney now living in Hawaii.
