It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time! Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.
For those of you who like to read entertaining books about history, you may have heard of Sarah Vowell (The Wordy Shipmates, Assassination Vacation). Those of you who enjoy the movie The Incredibles might know her as the voice of Violet Parr (the sister). She’s also a regular contributor to popular public radio show This American Life. Anyway, the title and release date of her forthcoming book about 19th Century Hawaii history was finally revealed. Unfamiliar Fishes will be released tentatively on March 22, 2011. I’ve been looking forward to reading this for quite a while and am happy to see that it’s in the final stages of development.
Don’t forget to keep voting on the First Book Cheerios Challenge to help Hawaii get into the Top 5! The top 5 states in the country will receive 20,000 books each for needy children. Currently Hawaii is #6 behind New York, Arizona, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. All you have to do is answer multiple choice trivia on children’s books. Each correct answer counts as a vote. Let’s help Hawaii’s keiki by answering as many questions correctly as you can. REMEMBER: You must hit the “I’M DONE” button for all of your trivia answers to count! For more info check out First Book-Oahu’s blog.
The Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) will have an ongoing Barnes & Noble Bookfair at the Ala Moana branch from August 6 – 8. If you present the voucher at the register when you buy most items at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana, part of the proceeds will go to help HTY. Also, if you purchase more than $50 worth of items you will receive one complimentary Youth Ticket to any 2010-2011 season production. There will be a HTY desk at the front of the store with more info. Please check out the official HTY B&N Bookfair flyer here for more information (and the vouchers).
