Friday, January 13
Book Talk & Signing: Capt. Charles Moore – Capt. Charles Moore will discuss his new book, Plastic Ocean: How a Sea Captain’s Chance Discovery Launched a Determined Quest to Save the Oceans, at HPA’s Energy Lab, located at the Upper Campus. Plastic Ocean tells how Moore returns to an area known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which he first encountered in 1997 after a trans-Pacific sailing race, and culls scientific samples with a game, but mostly neophyte crew. - Friends of the Libraries Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – FOLK will hold a book sale on the library lanai. The Kona Libraries Friends are in need of volunteers for their book sales. - Friends of Waialua Library Book Sale – Friends of the Waialua Public Library holds a book sale at the library every 3rd Saturday of the month. There is also a bake sale at the book sale. Playing the Matrix with Mike Dooley – Spend a day with Mike Dooley, the speaker featured in “The Secret” movie in an event that will leave you utterly convinced of your power, worth, and how easy life can be once you begin working with the Universe instead of unwittingly working against it. - Preventing Dementia: The Importance of Brain Stimulation and Other Key Factors – Dr. Thomas Harding, Forensic Neuropsychologist and Brain Rehabilitation Specialist, will conduct the workshop and present proven brain stimulation principles and exercises that strengthen brain function and stop memory decline. Dr. Harding will identify current dementia-related risk factors to learn what risks may be present in a person’s life. He will demonstrate strategies to reduce risk factors – to keep more of the brain function one has and the gains made with the brain stimulation exercises. Aina Haina Public Library; 10:30 A.M. A Sweet Dash of Aloha book signing and demonstration – Meet the Chef! Sample the Goodies! Meet the culinary minds behind the hottest local cookbook, A Sweet Dash of Aloha: Guilt-Free Hawaii Desserts and Snacks [read our review here]. Chefs will be here to discuss healthy eating, demonstrate technique and share samples. Chefs will sign your copy of the book too! Demonstration by Chefs Alyssa Moreau and Carol Nardello. - The Chamber Music Hawaii Galliard String Quartet – Considered Hawaii’s premier string quartet, The Chamber Music Hawaii Galliard String Quartet will present a free performance at the library. This quartet performs music that features the works of favorite composers such as Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani; the group’s repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes, romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music, and more. - Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading. This week they will be reading Fancy Nancy by Jane O’Connor. Chicken Soup for the Soul Author Lisa Pawlak – Join the book store in welcoming Lisa Pawlek, contributing author to the ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ series. - Damron Dancers – An educational as well as entertaining program on tap dance and its music. There will be a wide variety of music used for different style tap dances. The background and origin of the various pieces of music will be discussed and ample time will be allowed for questions and answers during the presentation. Free to the public. - Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Tributes will be read in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday! Men and women, some of whom actually met and marched with him, will be reading and discussing his work and honoring his beautiful spirit. Ask any available bookseller for more information. - M.I.A. Art & Literary Series – M.I.A. teams up for the first time with Honolulu Weekly to bring you the winners of the Weekly’s first fiction and poetry contests. Building of Hawaii presentation – Buildings of Hawaii presents the architecture of the six major islands in the Hawaii chain. Don J. Join Don for a special presentation and book signing of this long awaited and much anticipated resource, representing twenty plus years of research.
