Tom Peek reading from Daughters of Fire – This gathering is free and open to the public. Tom Peek’s debut novel picks up Hawaii’s story where James Michener left off. Three Hawaiian women–a young activist, an anthropologist, and an aging seer–call forth their deepest traditions to confront an extravagant resort development. A visiting astronomer stumbles into their world, falls in love with the anthropologist, and enters a Polynesian realm of volcanoes, gods, and revered ancestors. Friends, Books, Music: THE SALE – Presented by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii it’s the fourth annual “Friends, Books, Music – THE SALE,” book & music sale! Meet the Author: Elithe Kahn, Ph.D. – The Kaua`i Museum introduces a new staple: the first installment of their “Author Series” opens today as they proudly present the works of Kahu Elithe Aguiar Kahn, Ph.D., author of HA Breathe!. Kahn teaches proper breathing techniques and pono (proper intent). Her book covers three breath forms widely practiced in the past, that are almost nonexistent today1. - Hanafuda, Hawaii Style – Author Helen Nakano will share the stories of “Uncle Uchida of Frog Lane” and “How the Rabbit Got to the Moon.” Instructions for playing the local version of this old Japanese card game will follow in the second half of her presentation. Healthy Food is Tasty Food – Adults can learn how to prepare foods for eating such as chocolate, saimin, eggs, butter, pork, rice, and desserts in a delicious and nutritious manner. Madden will discuss techniques for shopping and cooking foods for weight loss and chronic disease prevention. Food samples for tasting, recipes, and a resource guide will be provided. - READ to a dog! – Hawaii Canines for Independence Therapy Dog Teams will be at the Library every Saturday in January. Reading to a Therapy Dog builds reading confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and it is a lot of tail wagging fun! First through sixth grade children can sign up for ten-minute reading sessions. Children must be on time to prevent losing the opportunity to read to a dog. Hawaii Canines for Independence is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially trained dogs that will give them the freedom and confidence to live more independent lives! Meet Award-Winning Artist Matthew Holm – Matthew Holm is an award-winning children’s literature artist from Portland, Oregon. He has been drawing comics since he was a middle school student in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Holm is co-creator of two children’s graphic novel series with his sister Jennifer: the award-winning “Babymouse” series and the Indiebound-Bestselling “Squish” series. His latest creation Extreme Babymouse is the 17th book in the series about Babymouse, a female heroine.
