It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time! Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.
I hope everyone has a great Kamehameha Day today! Don’t forget that next week begins the annual week-long Friends of the Library Book Sale at McKinley High School.

Saturday, June 12
- 09:00am – Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale at the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. Sale is from 9am to 1pm to help benefit the library. More info
- 10:00am – Friends of Mililani Public Library will host a Book Sale at Mililani Public Library from 10am – 3pm. Great deals on books will help support the local library. Call 626-7292 for more information.
- 10:00am – Children’s Storytime at Barnes & Noble Lahaina (Maui). More info
- 10:30am – See “The Mask Messenger” from Faustwork Mask Theatre at Kailua Public Library. “The Mask Messenger” will discuss, demonstrate, and expand the concept of the mask, exploring its relationship to human psychology, business, fashion, art, dance, and theatre. For more info, call 266-9911.
- 10:30am – Watch a “Mystery Movie” at McCully-Moiliili Public Library: This fantasy-adventure movie is directed by Tim Burton and is the story of Alice, a teenager who accidentally returns to Underland, a place she had visited as a child. The movie is rated PG; parental guidance is suggested. Contact the Library at 973-1099 for the movie title and more info.
- 11:00am – A costume character will visit Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall’s children’s storytime. Arthur will be there to share some of his most favorite stories! Come and meet Arthur, and parents, don’t forget to bring a camera. More info
- 11:00am – Children’s storytime at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana! Reading of The Sandwich Swap. More info
- 11:00am – Toy Story 3 Movie Release Party at Borders book stores across Hawaii! Celebrate with stories, games, giveaways and more at this very special movie release party for kids ages 4 to 9. Call the store for details. More info
- 12:00pm – The Chamber Music Hawaii Spring Wind Quintet will conduct a free concert at Aina Haina Public Library in the Children’s area. Admission is free. For more information, please call the Library at 377-2456.
- 01:00pm – Author Talk and Green Book Signing at The Green Energy Outlet (575 Cooke St. in Kaka’ako). Local author Mindy Pennybacker will be providing practical sustainable living tips and signing her book, Do One Green Thing: Saving the Earth Through Simple Everyday Choices. More info
- 01:00pm – Author Event at Kona Stories Book Shop. Olympic coach and author Ken Foreman shares inspirational tales from his new book A Coach’s Journey: From a Sand Lot to the Olympic Stadium. More info
- 02:00pm – Hawaiian storytelling for kids at Makiki Community Library. Storytellers Gene and Shirley Parola will be telling Hawaiian legends in honor of King Kamehameha Day. More info
Sunday, June 13
- 01:00pm – Dr. Sustainability and the Green House will present “Garbology,” a free program at Pearl City Public Library in the Adult Reading Area. Learn how you can dive deeper into the waste stream and perform a “waste audit” to discover the actual quantity of valuable resources that are sent to the landfill everyday. - 01:00pm – Book signing event w/ artist Jon J. Murakami at Borders in Ward Centre. Jon will be on hand to sign copies of his new board book Geckos Up Geckos Down. Check it out! Source
