It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald! – Free. Ronald McDonald will offer a fun-filled interactive performance featuring a creative blend of music, magic and games to reinforce the idea that reading is fun, and books play an important part of every day. Ronald will emphasize appropriate library use and the proper care of books. This special 30-minute event is suitable for children of all ages. - Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – Every second Saturday, the Friends of the Library, Kona hold a book sale. F.O.L.K. Members receive 20% off Lanai Sales. Proceeds from the sale will go to help fund Kona libraries. The book sale will be held on the library’s lanai. To volunteer email: booksales@folkhawaii.com. Rakugo Japanese-Storytelling Performance – Bento Rakugo, a dynamic group led by artistic director Yasu Ishida, will perform in the traditional Rakugo (Japanese translation: “fallen words”) storytelling style with a modern twist to the Japanese comedy. Rakugo is one of the most popular forms of Japanese theatre, with a tradition spanning more than 300 years. In Rakugo, the performer presents a comic story while sitting on a Japanese cushion throughout the entire performance, speaking all of the voices in both the first person and third person. “Uncle Wayne” & Howling Dog Band – Keiki ages 3 and older, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to experience an energetic, educational, and entertaining performance by Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band. “Uncle Wayne” Watkins, an Early Childhood educator and children’s advocate, will inspire children to laugh, dance, and sing-along as he strums his acoustic guitar and performs classic children’s songs as well as his original compositions. Frank De Lima Performance – Frank De Lima, winner of 12 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and one of Hawaii’s most popular comedians, will be the featured performer for the One-Year Anniversary Celebration of the new Manoa Public Library. This free event will be held in the Programming Room. The “Portuguese Prince of Hawaiian Comedy” has been entertaining local residents and tourists alike for more than 30 years with his zany parodies, outrageous sense of humor, and spontaneous creativity. De Lima’s specialty is translating issues – such as current events, fads, attitudes, and people – into musical parodies. In addition to comedy, De Lima is passionate about helping Hawaii’s students understand the importance of education by reading, studying, and using public libraries. Hawaiki Rising Book Signing – Sam Low, author of Hawaiki Rising: Hōkūleʻa, Nainoa Thompson, and the Hawaiian Renaissance, a book covering the journey of the Hōkūleʻa and education of Nainoa Thompson, will participate in a book signing reception. - Protecting the Ocean and Our Health: Plastic Reduction Solutions – The event is free and open to the public and takes place on World Ocean Day. The event includes doorprizes from B.E.A.C.H. Suzanne Frazer, Co-Founder of Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai`i (B.E.A.C.H.) will speak about the importance of the ocean and the urgent need to take action to protect it. Suzanne will speak about solutions to plastic – how our everyday choices and actions can make a difference to protecting our health as well as the environment and marine life. This talk will include information about chemicals in plastic, persistant organic pollutants and the impacts of plastic on marine life and the environment. The Joy of Playing the Ukulele – Roy Sakuma, recognized as Hawaii’s foremost ukulele instructor, will share his joy of playing the ukulele and feature performances by some of his talented students. Sakuma’s system of teaching has brought the joy of music to thousands of ukulele players for more than three decades. - Learn How Acupuncture Can Benefit Your Health – Licensed acupuncturist Mei-Lin Maunakea will discuss how acupuncture and other treatment modalities used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can help to improve your health. Research has shown that acupuncture can help to improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, improve quality of sleep and increase energy level.
