It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time! Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the week’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.
Free Comic Book Day
It’s back! Get your HSPLS cards ready because Free Comic Book Day is coming Saturday, May 7th! Just present your valid HSPLS card at any participating library and receive a free comic book, while supplies last. This is the tenth anniversary of HSPLS’ participation and all the heroes will be available including Thor, Batman, and even Kung Fu Panda! Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘I, and made possible by the generous support from comic retailers Jelly’s the Original and Collector Maniacs.
Thirteen (13) libraries will be participating statewide. The Oahu locations are: Aiea (ph. 483-7333), Aina Haina (ph. 377-2456), Hawaii Kai (ph. 397-5833), Kailua (ph. 266-9911), Kapolei (ph. 693-7050), Liliha (ph. 587-7577), McCully-Moiliili (ph. 973-1099), Mililani (ph. 627-7470), and Waimanalo (ph. 259-2610). The neighbor island locations are: Hilo (ph. 933-8888), Kealakekua (ph. 323-7585), Kihei (ph. 875-6833) and Lahaina (ph. 662-3950).
Star Wars officers and troops from the Pacific Outpost 501st Legion, Rebel Legion Hawaii, and Oahu FanForce will also be appearing at the following six Oahu libraries: Aiea, Aina Haina, Hawaii Kai, Kapolei, McCully-Moiliili, and Mililani. Attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras for special event. Contact the individual library for appearance times.

- Ka Palapala Poʻokela Awards – This year marks the 18th year of this awards gala, presented by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association. The best books from Hawaii publishers in 2010 will be recognized—and this year the general public is invited! Listen to the smooth sounds of Nā Leo, enjoy pūpū and cocktails, and even get a free tour of the museum if you’re early! Visit hawaiibooks.org to purchase tickets. - Author Event with Lowell Angell – If you’re in Hilo on a Saturday afternoon, come on down to the book store as they welcome Lowell Angell, author of Theatres of Hawaii. This book celebrates the rich history of entertainment venues (theatres) in Hawaii through more than 200 archival photographs and little–known details of eighty theatres on five islands, including fifteen theatres on the Big Island. - Waves of Resistance Book Launch – Isaiah Walker argues that throughout the twentieth century, Hawaiian surfers have successfully resisted colonial encroachment in the po‘ina nalu (surf zone). Drawing from Hawaiian language newspapers and oral history interviews, Walker’s history of the struggle for the po‘ina nalu revises previous surf history accounts and unveils the relationship between surfing and colonialism in Hawai‘i.
