Welcome to another weekend and another edition of Book End. Probably the biggest news this week for Hawaii Book Blog is that we successfully completed our very first giveaway with a winner all the way in Murfreesboro, Tennessee! She won an autographed copy of Jocelyn Fujii’s Stories of Aloha. If you’re reading this and didn’t win (or get a chance to enter), don’t worry we have more giveaways scheduled for this year, so please make sure to follow us here and on Twitter and Facebook.
In some buzz around the film industry, actor & celebrity George Clooney (Batman & Robin, Ocean’s Eleven) is in talks to star as the lead in Alexander Payne’s upcoming movie The Descendants which is based on the first novel of Hawai’i author Kaui Hart Hemmings. We haven’t reviewed the book yet, but we did review her first book House of Thieves which was a collection of her short stories. The film is scheduled to begin filming in Hawai’i next February or March. This is exciting news! Clooney helps bring a lot of star power to this Hawai’i-based project and hopefully this movie will help spotlight not only Hemmings but other Hawai’i authors and books. Clooney is a good actor who more often than not picks good projects and Alexander Payne is a fine director, having co-written and directed the critically acclaimed Sideways.
