Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!  We want to give a big mahalo to all of the veterans in Hawaiʻi and around the world.  Thank you for serving your country with distinction; all of us at Hawaiʻi Book Blog appreciate your service and dedication.

Don’t forget, all branches of the Hawaii State Public Library will be closed this weekend, from November 11 – 13.

Book Fair Weekend

This weekend, Kahala Mall’s Barnes & Noble book store will be hosting two book fairs to benefit two different organizations.  On Saturday, there will be a book fair for the Mission Houses MuseumClick here for more info.  On Sunday, a book fair will be held for the UH Manoa Children’s CenterClick here for more info on that.  As an added bonus, there will be an Uncle Wayne Songfest for the keiki on Sunday at 11:00 A.M.

On Friday, the Barnes & Noble in Lahaina, Maui will be hosting a book fair for Lahaina Intermediate School. For more info, click here.

Remember, book fairs work by telling the cashier or showing them a coupon/voucher to let them know you want part of the proceeds of your purchase to go to help that organization.  Contact the organization and/or the book store to make sure your purchases help out.

Friday, November 11

  • Book Release Party “Sip & Nibble: How I Lost 120 Pounds” – A Book Release Party will be held for Jenniffer Welliver’s new book Sip & Nibble: How I Lost 120 Pounds.  Every woman who fought the same weight loss battle, with or without success, will learn a lot from this book because she will recognize a lot of her own story in it.  Maui Beach Hotel (170 Kaahumanu Avenue, Kahului); 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.  For more info visit jwelliverbooks.com.
  • Hear the Voices of Veterans w/ Maxine Hong Kingston– Maxine started a veterans writing and meditation workshop in 1993. Eighty of these veteran writers authored an anthology, Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace, edited by Maxine and published by Koa Books.  Maxine will read selections from this book and she invites you to come and read a peace poem, sections from Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace, or another writing for up to five minutes. Or just come to listen. They will also have a walking meditation, and will ring a bell of peace in commemoration of those who have died in war.  This gathering is free and open to the public.   • Alu Like’s 4th Annual Kauikeaouli Literacy Fair– A festival to honor Kamehameha III and his vision for a literate nation.  There will be award winning entertainment, native plants, books, Hawaiian food, Hawaiian crafts, Lomilomi massage, cultural demonstrations, and of course lots and lots of books!  This is a free event and there will be free parking available at South & Pohukaina.  Alu Like Building (555 South Street); 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.  For more info call 535-1314 or contact Kai Muki at lynn@mutualpublishing.com.
  • Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading.  This week they will be reading Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka.   • Book Launch Celebration: Tasi’s Gift, A Tale of Samoa – Author, Tamara Montgomery, will read and autograph her new book.   • Fred Soriano, Kalai Ki`i Pohaku, Carver of Stone book event – Charlene Asato has captured Fred Soriano’s philosophical approach to his stone carvings and garden landscaping and illustrates this book with her insightful photographs, brush and ink renderings and calligraphy. Join her and Fred and talk story about the development of the book and the process of carving stone and landscaping. Book is $25.
