It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time!  Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.

Book Fair!

Barnes & Noble Ala Moana will be hosting a Book Fair to benefit the Mission Houses Museum on Saturday, November 13 from 9:00am to 9:00pm.  You can check out the official Facebook Event here.  This is a perfect time to get some holiday shopping done and help support a wonderful historic site.  The voucher number is  10287845.  Use this voucher when you make a purchase at Barnes & Noble or online—a portion of each sale using the voucher will be gifted back to the museum and library at no additional cost to you.  The Mission Houses Museum puts on excellent programs and activities; it’s definitely worth it to give them support while you shop for yourself and others!

Friday, November 12

  • 05:30pm – Book Launch for Mai Pa‘a I Ka Leo, a new book from Bishop Museum Press.  This event will be held at the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Hall Atrium & Courtyard.  There will be a reception at 5:30pm, reading at 6:30pm and book sale with book signing at 7:00pm.  Call 848-4135 or email press@bishopmuseum.org for more information.  Note: You need to have RSVP’d by November 8.  Source

Saturday, November 13

  • 09:00am – The Friends of the Library Kona will be hosting a Book Sale on the Kailua-Kona Public Library Lanai from 9am – 1pm.  Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the Kona libraries, including educational, entertainment and reading programs, visiting authors, magazine subscriptions, CD’s, DVD’s new book purchases.   • 09:00am – Barnes & Noble Book Fair in support of the Mission Houses Museum from 9am to 9pm.  All purchases made at Barnes & Noble or online with voucher # 10287845 will help benefit the museum.  Do your part, buy some books and help out this great piece of our history!  More info
  • 10:00am – “The Tea Story: Explore the World in a Cup of Tea” special event at Hilo Public Library (Hawaii Island).  JoAnn Kawamura Aguirre, a retired professor of education and a tea educator certified by the Specialty Tea Institute, will present a free one-hour program about the culture, history and geography of tea.  For more information, call 933-8888.  Source

  • 10:00am – Join the dedication and blessing for the Mililani Public Library Native Plant Garden in the Atrium.  Call 625-8789 for more info.  Source
  • 10:00am – Christmas Card Craft Program for Adults will be held at Kapolei Public Library.  Participants will be able to create two Christmas cards.   • 10:30am – The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii is hosting a Book Presentation and Signing in the Gallery Theater.  Dr. Patricia Brown will lead a presentation on her latest book Kula San Maui’s Healing Place.  The event is free and open to the public.   • 11:00am – Build-A-Bear Story Time at Borders Books & Music stores throughout Hawaii.  Borders will feature the Build-A-Bear Workshop book Holly & Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure, Holly & Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure DVD and Hal Moose, a Build-A-Bear Workshop plush toy, in stores for the holidays.  PLEASE check with your local Borders to see if they are participating in this event.  More info

  • 12:00pm – Book Signing Event at Borders in Ward Centre.  Author Carol Moen Wing and illustrator Ruth Moen will be on hand to sign copies of their new children’s book Lio the Carousel Horse.  Check out this great duo and their beautiful keiki book from local publisher BeachHouse Publishing.  Source
  • 12:00pm – Come to Native Books / Na Mea Hawaii (Ward Warehouse) for a very special author event!  Talented author and illustrator Caren Ke`ala Lobel-Fried will be on hand to discuss and sign copies of her new children’s book Legend of the Gourd, which reveals how the people of the Kamā‘oa Plain came to be known as the Children of the Gourd.  More info
  • 01:00pm – Book Signing Event at Borders in Ward Centre.  Author Laurie Ide and designer Karley Ide will be available to sign copies of their new book from Mutual Publishing, Hawaiian Sea Life Origami: A Beginner’s Step-By-Step Guide.  They may even show you a demonstration of their origami skills if you’re lucky!  Source

  • 01:00pm – There will be an Oahu Wind Quintet Concert at Aina Haina Public Library.  This one-hour program will feature works ranging from Darius Milhaud to Daiske Mogi, each piece being based on music from a variety of different cultures – all put in the context of the wind quintet.  Source

  • 01:00pm – Basically Books in Hilo, HI (Big Island) will be hosting a special author event.  Linda Ching, author and award-winning photographer will be on hand to talk about and sign copies of her new book Ao: Ten Years of Light. The 80 folio images in this collection showcase a decade of bringing the legends and myths of the islands alive through the fine art of photography, which is sometimes defined as “painting with light.” These images all illustrate Hawaiian mo’olelo, the stories of old.  For more info, call (808) 961-0144.  Source
  • 03:00pm – There will be a Book Launch event at Native Books / Na Mea Hawaii (Ward Warehouse).  Akule is a new book from Editions Limited that shows great appreciation for akule life through vivid photography captured by Wayne Levin.  Come join Wayne Levin and Akule Fisherman Buzzy Agard to learn all about these fish and have a copy of the book signed.  From 3pm-5pm.  More info
