Friday, November 16

  • Aina Haina Public Library Book Sale – Friends of Aina Haina Public Library, in partnership with Rotary Club East Honolulu, will be having their annual book sale this weekend (Fri-Sat). Great selection of books, including best sellers, children’s, Hawaiiana, history, art, all at a modest price. Also available are DVD’s and CD’s. Come early for the best selection and get a head start on your Christmas shopping!  All proceeds from the sale will go to the Library to fund the programs it provides to the community.   • Local Author Event w/ Jasmyne Boswell – Jasmyne Boswell, transformation coach and local author of What If the Problem’s Not the Problem? Four Practices for Peace of Mind, will be signing and discussing her book at the store. Come down and talk to her about her book and its helpful techniques.   • Hawaiian Music and Musicians book signing – Meet with John Berger, author of the definitive tome on Hawaiian music: Hawaiian Music and Musicians:An Encyclopedic History Berger carried on the legacy begun by Dr. George S. Kanahele in creating the de facto encyclopedic guide to Hawaiian music.   • Book Event: Reflections in Solitude – Meet author Randall Ng with his latest book, Reflections in Solitude: Home in Hawaii. Randall Ng’s poems are honest, immediate and inspiring.   • Furoshiki: An Eco-Friendly Craft Program – Got gifts to wrap? Go green this holiday season and learn the art of Furoshiki–Japanese style reusable gift wrapping. Eco-craft expert Evelyn Nakamura will conduct this one-hour program for adults. Supplies will be provided. Class size is limited and registration is required.   • Meet author/illustrator Roy Chang – Meet Roy Chang, a two-time Pa`i award-winning Editorial Cartoonist for MidWeek, and now author of a manga-style children’s fiction book. Chang, who is also an art teacher and freelance illustrator, will preview Cacy & Kiara and the Curse of the Ki`i, his new action-adventure chapter book, and demonstrate his drawing technique and writing process. It’s the story of two sixth-grade cousins who experience an imaginative, adventurous ride to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawaii, and learn about Hawaiian myths and legends. This one-hour program is suitable for ages 8 and older.   • “Uncaged Signing” With Frank Shamrock – Meet Frank Shamrock, featuring his book, Uncaged: My Life as a Champion MMA Fighter.   • Book Event: Brazil by Tomas Belsky – Hilo artist and writer Tomas Belsky shares his escapades as a Peace Corps volunteer during the sixties in his new book, Brazil.   • Event: Ancestry of Experience by Leilani HolmesAncestry of Experience: A Journey Into Hawaiian Ways of Knowing, by Leilani Holmes, who lives in San Diego. Leilani Holmes was born in Honolulu to a Native Hawaiian mother but adopted by haole parents and moved to Ohio. Ancestry of Experience: A Journey Into Hawaiian Ways of Knowing is written in two voices: remembrances and search for identity using a more personal voice; a scholarly presentation in another.   • M.I.A. Art & Literary Series – Don’t forget that this Monday is the M.I.A. event for November! Poetry, Music, Fiction, Arts! They are happy to present the amazing voice of Seleena Harkness & the provocative work of Joseph Han, Terese Svoboda, and Timonthy Dyke. All ages, bar is open wth ID. Parking is available in their parking lot. Additional parking can be found at the warehouse next door at 839 Queen Street, where it says Wesellthings4u.
