Book Fair
Both Barnes & Noble stores on Oahu are hosting book fairs this Saturday. Typicall for book fairs, if you mention the organization when purchasing an item (or you bring a coupon to the register), part of the proceeds of your sale will be donated to that group. This even includes Starbucks purchases, so be conscious of organizations holding book fairs!
This Saturday, Kahala Mall’s B&N will be hosting a book fair for the Montessori Community School. The Ala Moana Center B&N will host a book fair for Hickam Elementary. So, no excuses! Either way, you can help out. Even if you’re on Maui, you can help out TODAY (Friday) as the Lahaina B&N is hosting a book fair for the Maui Preparatory Academy.

Hawaiian Surfing: Traditions from the Past – An Illustrated Talk – Learn about the history of Hawaiian surfing: the many styles, the customs, the techniques, and the importance to culture. John R.K. Clark is the author of the masterfully researched reference book, Hawaiian Surfing: Traditions from the Past [read our review] and brings an expert voice to the subject. 6th Annual Book Day – Join the Daughters of Hawaii on their sixth annual book day celebration! Get your holiday shopping done early and enjoy a 20% discount on all books including new titles. Local authors will be discussing & autographing their latest editions. “Novel Destinations: There’s the Door?” dramatic stage presentation – This is a humorous and poignant examination of the struggle to answer life’s big questions through original stories starring storytellers Neal Milner, Dann Seki, Nyla Fujii-Babb, and musician Jeffy Stephen Babb. - Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading. This week they will be reading I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson. - Honolulu Town: Schools and Churches – This is a free program and discussion about the history of schools and churches in Honolulu Town. Laura Ruby and Ross Stephenson, who are currently collaborating on their forthcoming book Honolulu Town, will be the featured speakers. They will focus on schools for kamaaina and churches, temples, and shrines in Honolulu’s history. This one-hour program is suitable for high school age and older. Murder Leaves Its Mark at DOH Book Day – Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl will be participating at the Daughters of Hawaii Annual Book Day at the Queen Emma Summer Palace. - “Get Ready” Emergency Preparedness Workshop – Hurricane season is here and runs through November 30. This workshop will provide important information for residents to know such as when and where to evacuate, and explain the difference between hurricane and tsunami shelters. Learn how to make an emergency plan for your family. Find out how to stay informed when there is a hurricane or tsunami watch, and what are the best resources available from the government.
