It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time!  Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the weekend’s literary and library events here in Hawaii.

Tis’ the season!  Teen Read Week is coming next week (October 17-23) with the theme “Books with Beat!”  With that in mind, the Hawaii State Library has scheduled a multitude of awesome events over the course of the next few weeks to celebrate.  You can see their schedule of events specifically for children and teens at librarieshawaii.org.

Friday, October 15

  • 05:00pm – Petroglyphs of Hawaii Journal Author and Illustrator Lynn Cook joins photographer and author Linda Ching for book signing during Slow Art Friday in Downtown Honolulu.  5pm – 8pm.  More info

Saturday, October 16

  • 09:00am – Big Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale at the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai from 9am – 1pm.  Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the Kona libraries, with funding that includes educational and entertainment programs, community summer reading programs, visiting authors, magazine subscriptions, CDs, DVDs and new book purchases and as always volunteers are welcome.  More info
  • 10:00am – Kids of all ages are welcome for Saturday Storytime at Borders in Pearlridge (Aiea).  More info
  • 10:00am – Come to Children’s Story Time at Barnes & Noble Lahaina (Maui).  More info
  • 10:30am – Anshū: Dark Sorrow book reading with Juliet Kono at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.  Reading will be followed by reception.  FREE and open to the public!  More info
  • 10:30am – African Music & Dance at Hawaii Kai Public Library!  Badenyaa African Diaspora Dance Theater is a professional performing arts ensemble of multi-racial collection of artists, dancers and musicians with experience in numerous dance companies throughout Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.   • 10:30am – The Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble will be at Kihei Public Library (Maui).  This unique cultural program will feature a demonstration and lecture on the art of performing with taiko (Japanese drums).  Recommended for ages 5 and older.  Ph. 875-6833 for more info.  Source
  • 11:00am – A very special, spooky keiki storytime at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana.  They’ll be reading Halloween Night by Marjorie Dennis Murray.  More info
  • 12:00pm – There will be a Bookfair at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana benefitting The Contemporary Museum of Hawaii (TCM) from noon to 4pm.  A portion of all purchases made on this day will benefit TCM, just let the cashier know at the register you want to support TCM, use the Bookfair ID#10282234, or download and print the coupon/voucher.  More info on the TCM website here.
  • 12:00pm – Famous film-critic Roger Ebert will be here in Honolulu at the HIFF Cafe (upstairs from the theaters at Dole Cannery) to sign copies of his latest book, The Pot and How to Use It:  The Mystery and Romance of the Rice Cooker.  Take this opportunity to meet a film-critic legend.  Other Ebert books will also be available.  Check out this article from the Honolulu Examiner for more info.
  • 02:00pm – There is a “The Lost Boy Release Party” listed for all Hawaii Borders.  They’ll have a book discussion, contests, games, and more celebrating this adventure.  Kids 8-12 are welcome.  Check your local Borders to see if they will be participating in this celebration.  More info
  • 02:00pm – “Sketches of People and Ice” w/ Pat Braden at Aiea Public Library.  Canadian storyteller and songwriter Pat Braden takes audiences to old mining towns, the working people, and the stark beauty of the rock and icelands he calls home.   • 02:30pm – Hamlet: Live and in Context! at Hawaii Kai Public Library.  Featuring Kennedy Theatre actors performing scenes, experience thrilling moments from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with discussion moderated by internationally recognized Shakespeare scholar, Dr. Valerie Wayne.   • 03:00pm – Slam Poetry with Kealoha at Kailua Public Library.  Kealoha, Hawaii’s SlamMaster since 2003, will perform a full slam poetry program that deals with social, personal, and cultural themes to give attendees a roller-coaster experience filled with laughter and drama.   • 01:00pm – Hamlet: Live and in Context! at Kaneohe Public Library.  Featuring Kennedy Theatre actors performing scenes, experience thrilling moments from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with discussion moderated by internationally recognized Shakespeare scholar, Dr. Valerie Wayne.   • 02:00pm – “Flight Without Wings” Science Program at Kaimuki Public Library!  Jeff Stearns of Kids Invent! Hawaii will conduct this hands-on science demonstration and craft program that will explore basic concepts of flight and the elements required in order for an object to fly. This program is appropriate for ages 5 and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. For more information, call 733-8422.  Source
  • 03:00pm – Revolution Books will host the launch of Tinfish #20 (Tinfish Press’ annual poetry journal) at their bookstore on 2626 S. King Street.  Among the poets in issue #20 are Aaron Belz, Caroline Sinavaiana, R. Zamora Linmark, Craig Santos Perez, Lehua M.
