- Talk Story Event w/ Mark Panek – Come to downtown Hilo to celebrate First Friday and to the bookstore for a great talk story event with noted author Mark Panek. Panek will be discussing his latest book, Hawaii: A Novel (which we reviewed here). Hawai‘i takes place in the power vacuum of a recently deceased, nine-term United States Senator. With the formerly entrenched system of good-ol-boy power up in the air, and Hawai‘i becoming a place where our best and brightest are forced to leave in order to thrive, a collection of local characters on convergent paths aim to improve their lot and their vision of Hawai‘i’s future. - An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands book signing – San Diego resident Sandra Bonura will sign copies of her book (coauthored with Deborah Day), An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands: Letters of Carrie Prudence Winter, 1890–1893, at the Daughters of Hawai‘i “Day at Queen Emma Summer Palace.” The signing will be part of the overall annual fundraiser event that runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at , with an admission charge of $6 for adults, $1 for children over 6. - Star Wars Reads Day (Mililani) – Receive free Star Wars giveaways like bookmarks, tattoos, and posters, while supplies last. Attendees may also enter for a chance to win posters, books, and other items. Suitable for all ages. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. - Star Wars Reads Day (Kapolei) – Create Star Wars themed crafts and enjoy a photo opportunity with the Star Wars Stormtroopers from The Pacific Outpost 501st Legion. Program is suitable for ages 3 and older. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Kapolei Public Library; 10:00 A.M. to 12 Noon. For more information, call 693-7050.
- Mini-Con 2013 – It’s that time of the year, again! Local manga and comic book artists will be featured at this free library event. This year, artists and writers of Hachi Maru Hachi, an anthology showcasing comic book and prose works, will join a dazzling array of impressive artists from last year’s event. The usual headliners return including Audra Furuichi creator of nemu*nemu and Blue Hawaii; Jon J. Murakami creator of Gordon Rider; and graphic designer Kevin Sano. The Library will also screen a variety of cartoons at the event and offer free bookmarks and pencils. Cosplay is encouraged; participants who dress in costume will receive a special prize. - Star Wars Reads Day Festivities (B&N) – Join the book store for a special storytime celebration of all things Star Wars! Children ages 3-6 can enjoy a special Storytime while children ages 7-12 learn Jedi origami skills. All ages are welcome to join in the fun by dressing like their favorite Star Wars character! - The Work of Steve Shrader (Poetry Reading) – An exhibition gallery at the Koa Art Gallery is on display from October 3 through October 11 featuring photographs from Visits to Portland, Oregon 7/2000 – 7/2003. - He Lei, He Aloha: The Legacies of Queen Lili’uokalani – “This is a Lei of Love” celebrates the enduring legacies of Queen Lili‘uokalani – her music, love of homeland and complete dedication to the people of Hawai‘i. The Queen expressed her aloha through her actions and the examples she set. Meleanna Aluli Meyer, artist, art-educator, filmmaker, and descendant of Emma Nawahi, confidante of Queen Lili‘uokalani, will narrate this participatory program. This free 45-minute program includes community readings from the Queen’s autobiography Hawai‘i’s Story by Hawai‘i’s Queen, a 7-minute vignette inspired by the Queen, and a singalong of some of the Queen’s music. - Star Wars Reads Day (Hawaii Kai) – Enjoy a showing of the animated movie, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The movie will be presented in the first floor meeting room. Seating is limited and on a first come first serve basis. Free snacks will be provided, while supplies last. Movie is suitable for ages 12 and older. A jacket or sweater is recommended.
