The U.S. Army Strolling Strings, a premier ensemble of the U.S. Armed Forces, will present a free concert featuring their String Quartet in celebration of the 2010 HSPLS Summer Reading Program on Thursday, June 10 at noon in the Hawaii State Library Lobby.
The U.S. Army Strolling Strings is one of the most requested musical ensembles by our nation’s military leadership. The group serves as musical ambassadors and has provided entertainment at the White House for every president since its inception during the Eisenhower administration. In addition, the U.S. Army Strings perform for the Department of Defense, the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court, kings and queens, heads of state from countries throughout the world, and the general public.
String Quartet members will include: SFC Krista Smith (1st violin), SSG Annette Barger (2nd violin), SSG Timothy Zenobia (viola), and SGM Charlotte Roberts (cello).
The one-hour concert will feature a variety of classical and pop music such as Haydn’s “The Lark Quartet” (String Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, No. 5), “Nocturne” (Quartet No. 2, 3rd Movement, Andante in A Major) by Alexander Borodin, and selections from George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
The Friends of the Library of Hawaii are sponsoring this event which is recommended for ages 5 and older. Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
